Paul Hallett is President of the British Society of Soil Science (2025-2026) and Professor in Soil Physics at the University of Aberdeen. He is a Soil Physicist working on solutions to food and environmental security, mainly focussed on the interactions between plants, microorganisms and the physical behaviour of soil. His work spans from understanding the fundamental processes driving changes in soil physical properties by biology, through to applied research examining soil degradation and the underlying causes. Paul helped organise the science programme of the 2022 World Congress of Soil Science in Glasgow as the vice chair of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) Division 2: Soil properties and processes. He is a Core Panel Member of the NERC Peer Review College, Associate Editor of the European Journal of Soil Science and Technical Editor of Soil. He is the programme tutor of the only remaining MSc Soil Science in the UK at the University of Aberdeen, where he also co-ordinates postgraduate research training of over 150 PhD students in the School of Biological Sciences.

Lizzie is Associate Managing Director of the ADAS Sustainable Agricultural Systems Business and President Elect of the British Society of Soil Science. She is a Soil Scientist by training, with specialist knowledge of soil and nutrient management, precision agriculture, and diffuse pollution of air and water from agricultural systems. Lizzie’s current R &D projects focus on nutrient management decision support tools, and the environmentally sustainable recycling of organic materials to land.

Andrew Morris is Executive Director of the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) and has over 20 years’ experience in environmental leadership, policy advocacy, and organisational development. He has strengthened BSSS’s international profile through engagement with the UNCCD and global soil health initiatives, fostering partnerships across Europe, Africa, South America, and India. Andrew also serves as the Western European CSO Panel Representative for the UNCCD (2025–2027)
Dominic Simms is the Marketing and Events Coordinator at the British Society of Soil Science. Dom has been with BSSS since 2022 and is responsible for providing communications support, implementing social media campaigns, and managing the society’s calendar of events.

Ernest holds an MSc Land Reclamation and Restoration from Cranfield University, UK and a PhD Bioscience Engineering from Ghent University, Belgium. He is currently a Research Scientist in the Environmental and Biochemical Sciences Department at the James Hutton Institute. His research focuses on applying engineering principles to soil and water management, with particular expertise in optical (infrared) spectroscopy and other sensing technologies, integrated with machine learning and data-driven approaches to characterise the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils. His work aims to improve understanding of how land management practices influence soil health and the delivery of ecosystem services from soil and water resources. He also applies these sensing technologies to the detection, monitoring, and characterisation of contaminants in soils and water, supporting environmental protection, sustainable resource management, and evidence-based decision-making.

Catriona is a soil scientist working in the civil service, and a BSSS early careers member. She has expertise in soil health, sustainable agricultural systems and nutrient management. She has also contributed to research in soil monitoring, soil plastics pollution, and novel cropping systems for UK agriculture.
Dr Carmen Rosa Medina-Carmona is a Lecturer in Soil Science at the University of Stirling and a soil scientist focused on developing sustainable and climate-resilient agroecosystems. Her research spans plant–soil interactions, soil carbon dynamics, and ecosystem resilience across natural and agricultural landscapes. She is particularly interested in soil biodiversity and the potential of land-sharing approaches, including mycoforestry, to enhance soil health, ecosystem services, and sustainable food production. Carmen also applies stable isotope techniques and soil spectroscopy in her research and serves on the Local Organising Committee for EUROSOIL 2028
Jess is a PhD student at the University of Aberdeen researching soil structural degradation on agricultural land in Scotland, funded by the Scottish Universities Partnership for Environmental Research (SUPER) Doctoral Training Partnership. Her work focuses on agricultural land management and soil biophysics, in particular soil structure, soil water retention properties and environmental impact. She also serves as the Early Career Committee Chair for the British Society of Soil Science.
Alex McBratney is an internationally recognized soil scientist based at the University of Sydney in Australia. His research integrates soil science, data science, and environmental stewardship to improve sustainable land management, inform policy, and advance global understanding of soils as a critical natural resource to achieve global soil security. Alex is originally from Scotland and is contributing to the field excursion program.
